Overcoming

Sorry about the late posting this week...I've been down at Camp Carl all week hanging out with some of you and having a grand ol' time.

In just one week we'll be getting on our flights to fly to Boston!

As I was reading this chapter, I was struck by how it made me think of a lot of the other chapters that we have read so far. Tell me how you think some of the other chapters in the book relate to this chapter and how they compliment each other.

Don't forget to do the questions on pgs 124 & 125. See you soon!

I think that this chapter reflects all the other chapters in the fact that like with sacrifice you have to be overcoming. and to be able to sacrifice you have to be able to over come what you need to sacrifice. and for endurance you have to be able to overcome the practice to be able to be enduring! and to be compassionate sometimes you have to overcome the fact that you don't exactly like this person but you are going to be compassionate to them anyway!! and you can basically apply the principle to any of the chapters!!

Hey Boochie here. haha jon for yall who dont know my nickname.

I agree with gary to sacrafice you have to overcome life and its obsitcules, you also have to overcome the devil.

ok so this has deff, been the best chap. for me. well basically its you just have too overcome the world. i mean whebn struggles come you have to turn to God and you cant just hope for the best you have to do something about it. God said theres gonna be struggles in every1s lives. He gives and takes away, dont curse God for what happens to you, overcome it. even tho its hard not too curse God for the badd things that happpen, if we do then we give in to satan,

k thts it, if its all gibberish my bad haha.

These Chapters are good chapters for this trip, but there is one chapter and I think it overcomes and matches with the other chapter in the book. This great chapter is called overcoming! Lets talk about some of the chapters like Sacrifice, leadership, and endurance. OK, sacrifice is a hard thing to do but when you pray for it and try to overcome it, it will go by soon. To be a leader you need to overcome your work ad get to now them more for then you can have leadership in your job. To have a good thing in overcoming things you need to have endurance to help you out with your problem. So as you can see the chapter Overcoming has a lot to do with other chapters. So in other words if we have trouble in Boston or get mad lets try to overcome it and get past the argument. Let's have fun in Boston!

well, first of all, I agree with Jon. i think this is the best chapter for me as well. i read this book several months ago in February or March, during a time in my life where I had a lot of stuff that I had to overcome, and this chapter reallllllllly realllllly helped me a lot. I think this is a chapter that could help all of us at some point in our lives.

it will probably sound like I'm copying off everyone but i definitely agree with the three answers so far. this chapter goes with the others in this book because if you think about it, most people who are an Inspiration [chapter one] have overcome something challenging and difficult in their lives, as have many people who are Influential [Influence-chapter 2]. Communities [chapter 3] have to overcome things together all the time. when overcoming something you have to have Courage[chapter 4]. to be a Leader [leadership, chapter 5] some people have to overcome their fear of stepping up to big challenges or being responsible for the well being of a group. with Compassion [chapter 6] you have to overcome selfishness. for Endurance [chapter 7] you have to be able to overcome obstacles and suffering [like Zach said when he was talking about Jesse Owens at the bottom of page 90]. And for sacrifice [chapter 8], just like for Compassion, you have to be able to overcome selfishness.

only one more week!
YAY!!!! =]

I think this chapter is like the others in that they all talk about some form of slavery and why it's wrong. This chapter specifically talks about how people can have (a) terrible problem(s) and you're completely oblivious.

God has plans for us, but sometimes we need to go through some tough and/or painful times to get to where He wants us to be. I have no idea where this qoute is from, but this is kinda another way to say it: "Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain." The storm represents the tough/painful times. Dancing in the rain represents worshiping God through the good, and the bad.

WOW can't believe we're leaving in a week...CAN'T WAIT!

I think that the other chapters relate to this one in a lot of ways. All of the chapters, such as sacrifice, community, leadership, and endurance take overcoming to succeed. Overcoming our fears, and overcoming life obstacles is all part of the package of life. Being a part of a community takes overcoming your discomforts, and being a leader means overcoming your fears. As many others have said, overcoming is going to be a big thing for our trip. Stepping out of our own comfort zones and really reaching out to the people in Boston is going to take a lot of overcoming. But I know that if we overcome our fears, it will be really rewarding at the end. And if there is any drama, or big problems that we have on our trip, I think that we need to overcome those bumps and focus on why we are there in the first place. To help the people in Boston and show them how God has changed us for the better.

well i think that this chapter is talking about us going to be challenged and that u can learn from the challenges and that others may be able to help u out!

i think this chapter reflects other chapters because to overcome u need courage and endurance in case it doesnt work out the first time but eventualy u will overcome. I think on the trip we will hav to overcome a lot of barriers inside ourselves. overcome our fear of reaching out to others overcome wanting to do what we usually do nothing more nothing less if we can overcome stuff like that it will really help us on our trip

Look! It's a Bird, It's a Plane, No, it's Haych-Dizzle!!!!! lol

Complimenting other Chapters...
This chapter relfects a whole crapload of other chapters. To overcome all of your challenges takes a whole lotta courage and also a bunch of endurance. You have to go out and say your struggling which takes a lotta courage. Also, it may take a while for you overcome this and that will take a lotta endurance .

Hey there, lingy here,
I think this chapter kind of put together things that had been talked about in alot of the chapters because it focused on slavery, and the effects and that it has. All of us have things in our lives that we have to overcome, some more than others. I think gary relates the chapters well(Read his post).Well...............um...so..bye.

Anonymous said...

how they compliment each other.

The other chapters in this book relate to the overcoming chapter because in order to sacrifice, you have to overcome the difficulty of sacrificing. to be a leader, you have to overcome you fear of failing and trust God. to be compassionate, you need to overcome your hate and negative feelings towards others. to be courageous, you need to overcome your fears etc.
the chapters compliment each other because they all reflect overcoming struggles and putting your faith in God.

This chapter relates to alot of the other chapters such as courage, leadership, compassion, endurance, and sacrifice. all of those chapters take overcoming in order to actually happen. We need alot courage to overcome obstacles in our life. Leaders overcome lots of things to be a good leader. They try to make sure everyone is happy. Compassion takes overcoming because sometimes you have to be comppasionate even when you dont want to. we need great endurance to overcome many struggles. We need to overcome selfishness by sacrificing things. Zach apparently wants us to realize that we have many struggles and that God is there to help us overcome them. All of the other chapters were like leading up to this one to show that all the otehr topics need overcoming and that God can help with them.

Howdy hi!

I think that the chapters in this book relate to the other chapters because with the characteristics and skills in the chapters before you can overcome almost anything! Also without the ability to overcome many of the chapters before would never exist!

When you overcome something you need courage, endurance, strength, inspiration, compassion, and community.

in all of the chapters they talk about freeing slavery and he sacrificed just like the chapter about sacrifice, it pretty much sums up the chapters we've read so far.

I really liked this chapter and how he talked about facing ur weaknesses!

I think Overcoming is a lot like the chapters Courage and Sacrifice. Courage means to OVERCOME fears and be brave. Sacrifice kind of compliments Overcoming because you have to know how to sacrifice things to OVERCOME different obstacles.

Um I agree with everyone else that this chapter practicly sums up everything he has been talking about, mostly. It talks about sacrifice because that guy gave up everything he had (which wasn't much) because he thought that the money he was making singing was going back to his family. This guy (who's name I have forgotten already hahaha sry) is very inspiring, he was modern day slave but now he's so happy and knows and loves God! Then theres all the other chapters I could talk about but everyone else has HA!

Like Gary said, you have to over come everything.

This has been the best chapter of the book I think. You have sooo many things in the world that you have to overcome. We turn to God for his support and guidance. In the bible there are struggles people have to overcome. My aunt lost her sons and husband in a plane crash. For so long she blamed God for it. Then at last years Christmas service she forgave God. It took her a long time to forgive God but after time she overcame the toughness of the loss and forgave him, which I’m grateful for!

Well Tata for now! One WEEK left!
(Sorry for the lateness. I was on vacation)

all of these chapters have to deal with overcoming a difficulty or struggle in our life.. sacrifice, courage, leadership, compassion, those are all very very hard things to overcome.. as imperfect humans... but with gods help we can overcome all of them..
a verse in the bible says thtt god will never hand us something that we cannot handle.. if god hands us something in life that seems difficult...its a test..but its nothing that we cant handle.. we have to overcome the difficulties in our lives

hey there!!
mk so i really liked this chapter, and i think some of the other chapters in the book relate to this because as Hailee put it some of the chapters concepts take overcoming to actually happen. you need to overcome your selfishness in order to sacrifice. you need to overcome your fears and you will have courage. to be compassionate you need to overcome the fact that you need show kindness to everyone, even if you dont like them too much. with God we overcome the hard times and endure them.

this is one of the best chapters in this book for me.
its basically saying that in every obstacle in life or any challenge of hard time you cant give up and have to push to overcome it. And if your struggling to overcome this obstacle dont get mad at God for not fishing your problem right away just deal with it and try too keep your head up and keep pushing forward. thats all i have to say cya

I think this is a good chapter because you have to be an overcomer to be able to be or do the things in the other chapters.
For example, you have to overcome your fears to be courageous.
To have endurance you have to overcome your desire to quit and you have to keep going when you are tired. To sacrifice something you need to overcome selfishness.
Thats just some examples.
In order for the trip to go smoothly we will have to over come the fear and anxiety we might have in Boston as we try to have the characteristics in these chapters(but mostly we'll be having a good time)

i think this chapter relates to the other chapters because they all have something that was needed to be overcome and the whole theme of the book is about slavery and slavery was a big part in this chapter.

when i read that the choir boys weren't getting their money and knew that something was wrong, i thought it was kinda neat that they had the guts to say something to the guys. i also thought it was strange that they wouldn't go back to zambia because they knew it would ruin their family reputation. i do think that it is kinda silly for them go through pain just becuase their family reputation would be damaged, but that's just their way of culture i guess. maybe that's something that the people from zambia could overcome.

I think that this chapter relates to the other chapters by going on to tell about some of the people alive today who have experianced slavery. Like the story of Given Kachepa. His story was probably one of my favorites because he had a very unique story. But still I can't even imagine the frustration he must have felt when he found out that all the hard work he was doing wasn't even going to his family or to build schools in Zambia. And to think that he couldn't even go home because that would be considered a disgrace to his family. It's amazing how selfish people can be just to make money.

hay its ashton well if u dont kno me thats ok u will...haha..
soo like how does this chapter relate to the others... well i think that endurince and courge have allot to do with overcoming... to over come somthing u must have courge to do so and if u dont u wont beable to overcome what you want to over come also u have to have endurince to overcome things...if u dont have the will to do somthing it wount be done...
it think dis waz a very good chapter but overcoming like a fear for example is very very hard to do...

I think all these chapters tie
together in the way that you have
to be courageous to have good leadership skills. And you need to
have a lot of endurance to be able
to overcome something. You also need to have great compassion to
sacrifice something. In order to
work together as a community you all need to be inspired to do so.

I can't wait till Bosten!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As gary said...i think that the chapter that relates to this one the most is the sacrifice one. when you make a sacrifice, you have to be able to overcome what happens next..when action has taken place there is always reaction..and you have to be able to overcome that reaction whatever it may be. another chapter that this is connected with is the one about stepping out of your circle of friends. overcoming your shyness and fear to talk to other people is something you have to deal with in order to tell others about christ....

Most of these chapters have to do with overcoming problems and fears.
Nearly every day we have to overcome a problem. Whether its deciding to use our influence for a good cause, making the decision to help someone by serving them. To have courage you usually have to overcome something like a fear. When being a leader we need to overcome the problems that we are faced with and have God's strength take over our weeknesses and use our gifts.

I think this chapter relates to all the others because in other chapters they talk about problems that people had to OVERCOME!! So that's how all of the chapters relate to this one. The book has talked about heroes who overcame stuggles in their lives. I think many of the themes of the chapters tie in together.

All the other chapters relate to this chapter because in each chapter I read of someone having to overcome something - J. Wedgewood supported the anti-slavery movement even tho it could have cost him his business; H. Tubman overcame all the things that happened to her as a slave girl; Jessie Owens overcame all the ugly things that happened to him because he was black and kept running. Each chapter shows what someone sacrificed in order to overcome their situation.

I think that this chapter is like the others because it talks about freeing slaves like in every chapter.
I liked this chapter because it talks about sacrifice and that is one of my hardest things to do!

I think this chapter relates to other chapters because you are going to need to overcome something to be an influence, a leader, or a compassionate person. Also to overcome a fear or something you have to be willing to sacrifice. and its going to take some endurance and courage to overcome because it will probably take some hard work. I think on the trip we are going to have to be all of these things to be able to step out of our comfort zones and help others.

So sorry about the late post: I went to clay's park.

I just remember in the other chapters how millions of people are conned, cheated, and tricked into slavery. almost all the stories are like that: someone promised one thing, and then sold them into slavery. it's scary, really, how people would just take away the lives of other people just to make money.

I also can relate to the other chapters because they all seem to tell a story of someone who was just living their life, and was suddenly turned a slave. and then, even with that, they managed to turn around and either get out and make a difference or make the best of it. I think the entire theme of this book is that people are put into awful situations every day, and they don't know how or why they got there. and thats what zach hunter wants to fix.

This chapter is like lot of the other chapters. Such as sacrice, leadership, community, and endurance. You need to over come these challenges in life.

i think the whole book was about slavery, fears, and trust. changing your attitudes and actions so that you can help people! i hope to live my life to make a change in the world. peace out and see you tomorrow-elijah

I think that this chapter relates to all the others because to overcome, you have to sacrifice part of yourself for someone else, and it's easier to do so when you're working in a community of people who are there to keep you accountable and help you through the hard times. Also, part of overcoming is being able to endure hardships, and look at them as an opportunity rather than a heavy burden. And to do all of this, you definitely need a lot of courage and faith.

*Desi*

I think this chapter is similar to the others because it had to do with how slaves have hard times and its hard to endure the pain and try to escape. Also, a lot of sacrifice was made form the two people as through out the other chapters.

Hey Joel sorry so last minute, When I read this chapter what came to mind the most from preveous chapters is in the chapter Courage it talks about Harriet Tubman thinking about I relized that she had to overcome so much and it just really helped me to see things differently in the book.

That's all I got see u Friday, Sam H.

well when i read overcoming i think it shows that to overcome ALL the way you have to have sacrifice, leadership, compassion,
courage, community, and endurance first.whne you have all those you will overcome your goal/dilemma.

I think it's neat how Zach mentions Given Kacepa in the first but you don't get the details until this last one. It ties together because like in every chapter there seems to be some form of slavery. But then it goes on to show how those who went through it rose above it with Gods help. Also it tells about other who help out.

i think that the other chapters relate to this one in many ways. every chapters, such as sacrifice, community, leadership, and endurance take overcoming to make it work. Overcoming our fears, and overcoming obstacles is all part of life. Being a part of a community takes overcoming your fears. many others have said and i say that overcoming is going to be a big part of our trip. we will have to step out of our comfort zones and we need to reach out to the people in that we will be helping in boston is going to take lots of effort from everyone and this means overcoming some fears. But I know that if we overcome our fears, it will be totally worth it at the end of the trip. we need to overcome some grudes and little fights and cliques and remember why we are going to boston and to help the people who are less fortunate then us.we all need to remember that it is not about us!!!

i am so excited to go YEA!! we all will have a great time.
