Courage

Hey everyone...
Great thoughts on community. I'm looking forward to the community that we'll experience together this weekend and start to develop as a team through our all-nighter together. Speaking of which, if you have to come late or leave early or can't make it for some reason make sure that you've emailed me about it. You might have mentioned it on a Sunday or Wednesday, but I really need it in writing. And this weekend should definitely be a priority, because we have so few times together.

It's great to see that so many of you are enjoying the book. This week's chapter is on courage. Here's one of my favorite quotes from this chapter:

"By liberating yourself from fear, you open the door of your mind, allwing the room once occupied by fear to be filled with creativity and passion. And when creativity and passion come in and clean things out, you are able to care about more than yourself and your own fears. And that is a good thing."

I love this thought. I used to be extremely afraid of heights. Totally freaked out. One day I got to thinking "why am I afraid of heights...this is dumb!" So I forced myself to face my fears...at first just a little and then more and more. Now I have a healthy respect of heights (I don't attempt to do stupid things), and I'm able to really enjoy things that would have freaked me out before, like rock climbing. Or help others when they're scared of heights.

Who do you think is courageous? If you know them, ask them how they faced their fears and tell us about it.

You don't need to answer this question here, but what is something you are afraid of? What do you think are the steps you need to take to face that fear?

See you on Friday!

Community

So first off, I want to say that y'all had great answers to the first set of questions. I really enjoyed reading them. Keep it up!

This last chapter on community was really good & important for us, as we'll be needing to practice good community during our trip. The question this week is that I simply want to know what you got out of this chapter...what was most interesting for you or most challenging. How do you think that it could apply to our community as a trip in Boston?

MAKE SURE that you take time to answer the questions in the book on pages 43-45. Some of the answers probably are a bit more private than what would be best to post on here, but I'd love to hear your responses, so if you want you can email them to me (joel.harris@the-chapel.org), but you don't have to. But make sure you answer them in your books.

These questions are due by next Sunday (the 25th). If you're going out of town for Memorial Day weekend, make sure to post before you leave!

Good so far..

So I just got done reading everyone's answer to the first set of questions (everyone who's answered, at least) and...WOW...great stuff everyone!! Really good, thoughtful stuff going on. I'm trying to give some feedback/thoughts to each one of you, so check back in the post & you'll see my comments to you somewhere (haven't gotten everyone done yet...but keep checking back if you don't see a response on related to your comment yet. I'm doing them in the order they came in).

I'll have the new post for next Sunday up here ASAP. Don't forget to do it. And if you're getting behind, don't wait to catch up...do it now! I'm pumped to hear more of your thoughts soon...

Inspiration & Influence

Welcome to the first official assignment of our Be The Change experience. I'm pumped we get to read this book together & I think that Zach has some really good things to tell us. He's the guy that's pictured on the front and in the video's on the post right before this one (take a look if you haven't yet!)

One of the things I really like about this book is that it offers a couple questions at the end of each chapter to help you think through what you just read. These books are yours to keep, so feel free to write in your answers, to underline parts you think are important, or to make any other notes that will help you get the most you can from it.

Here's a couple questions that I'd like us to discuss on here. Just click on the comment button below and add your voice to the conversation. Make sure you read what other people have said, too, and respond to them as well as to the question(s) that I post each time. Remember that you need to have this section read & responded to on here by May 17. But the sooner you do it, the better!

(A quick note regarding answers...there is no length that an answer has to be. However, I really want you to dig into this book & not just slap something down & be done, so short answers are discouraged. Please take time to really think, write & respond. Make sure that you include your first name & last initial either in your comment somewhere.)

Who do you think is the most influential person in the world? Who are some of your biggest influences? What makes someone influential?

How do others view your generation? How do you wish your generation were branded?
